“Labyrinth”

Life is a labyrinth…a maze full of twists, turns, obstacles and dead-ends, all that preclude us from reaching our final destination—the best version of ourselves. In these concerts, we will journey through the emotional experience of our own personal labyrinths, with music that depicts moments of foolishness, isolation, and finally self-discovery.

We are especially honored and excited to be sharing not one, but two of our concert stages with other esteemed Bay Area singing ensembles. Our November 16 concert will feature the Young Men’s Ensemble of the Ragazzi Boys’ Chorus, under the directorship of Travis Rogers. Our November 23 concert will feature the 2024 FWD Northwest Division Quartet Champion—comprised of current and former members of ChanticleerPurple Rebar.

“Into the Horizon”

From the UUSF Sanctuary, come join the Fog City Singers for a one-night concert event chock-full of international-caliber barbershop music. We’re extra excited to be performing for the first time our full international contest set—which we will be taking with us to Clevleland next month for the 2024 BHS International Contest & Convention—in front of our local audience, and a couple of other charts to boot! Using music about sky, dawn, and weather, we look not just upward, but forward: into our own artistic horizon.

Not to be outdone, a couple (well, technically one and a half) of our own Barbary Coast Chapter quartets have earned the honor to compete in Cleveland as well. We are happy to give Artistic License and Western Addition the stage, such that they may each perform their disarmingly charming international contest music.

And as ever, we are excited to share our stage with our partner chorus, Fog City Harmonia, who are currently in the final stages of preparation for their own five-year anniversary show, “Rooted In Harmony”, that they will be bringing to Bay Area audiences early next month.

“Up/Down”

Back for more in ‘24, the Fog City Singers present “Up/Down”, a concert program meant to capture both the highest highs and lowest lows of life’s great roller coaster ride. With our signature blend of both barbershop and other tenor-bass a cappella we are exploring feelings of pride, elation, and ecstasy, and contrasting with those of misery, resignation and despondency.

For the first time, a Fog City set is punctuated by no fewer than three concerts. In addition to our full chorus repertoire that is consistent throughout, our shows in Walnut Creek and Healdsburg feature a healthy additional portion of barbershop from our chapter quartets, while our show in San Francisco is a fully joint endeavor with our new Finnish friends in harmony, the visiting Akademiska Sångföreningen—The Academic Male Voice Choir of Helsinki.

Summer setlet ‘23

Since the Fog City Singers’ inception, director Chris Lewis has given every downbeat. He has been our guiding visionary, the single constant unifying the 2015 meticulously-assembled “New SF Chorus” with every iteration to have represented the name “Fog City Singers” in the years since.

The Fog City Singers chorus would not be what it is today without Chris Lewis. The Fog City Singers would not be without Chris Lewis. But all good things must eventually come to an end, and it is with tremendous pride and sadness that Fog City wishes Chris well as he voluntarily steps away from his role as director and begins a new chapter of his life.

But…before he goes, we feel we can get one more abridged concert out of him, built from the same three-song, three-rehearsal format that started this chorus all these years ago.

And what’s better than one director? Fog City is happy and eager to hand the reins to its director for the future, Kory Reid, for the first time as well.

Three songs. Two directors. One fantastic afternoon of barbershop music.

“Textures”

We’ve featured each other, we’ve collaborated with each other—it has all been leading to this: the first fully joint concert between the Fog City Singers and our partner chorus, Fog City Harmonia.

We are both barbershop choruses at heart, and the barbershop world is full of new textures these days. The Barbershop Harmony Society, a historically men’s organization, recently disbanded their gender requirement through their “Everyone in Harmony” initiative, and in this show you’ll hear mixed-choir, tenor-bass, and upper-voice textures throughout.

Beyond the different distributions of voices, there are different textures which come from various ensemble sizes as well. From the fully exposed barbershop quartet texture, to the chamber choir textures of the individual ensembles and the robust texture of the combined chorus.

“Our Regards to Broadway”

There may be no more natural of a musical compatibility than that between Broadway show tunes and barbershop music. We’ve done many Broadway songs before in our Fog City shows, and it was perhaps inevitable that we would finally succumb completely and allow an entire show to be given the Broadway theming.

Filled to the brim with peppy up-tunes, heart-wrenching ballads, and everything in between, this concert aims to bring just a spoonful of the Broadway magic into Bay Area theaters in both San Francisco and Walnut Creek. Featuring many pop quartets, chapter quartets, and our partner chorus, Fog City Harmonia.

“Hot Vax Summer”

In June and July 2021, the Fog City Singers reconvened for the first time in over a year for 3 outdoor rehearsals in the San Francisco Bay Area, with several guest singers in tow. We prepared 3 new songs that seemed particularly relevant following a year of COVID-induced lockdown, during which singing together in person was impossible, and then filmed a few takes of each song at the final rehearsal.

Special thanks to The Family for hosting us and allowing us to record at their Family Farm outdoor amphitheater in Woodside.

“Passion Projects”

Fog City Singers is officially turning five years old. We know, we can’t believe it, either. As we enter into our fifth year we see an opportunity to jump back into experimentation mode, and try our hand at providing our audiences—and ourselves—with fresh performance experiences that reinforce our mission statement“to create a close fraternity of musicians; to apply diverse, world-class resources to our craft; and revolutionize how barbershop music is performed and appreciated.”

Tonight’s concert traces its origin to a midnight conversation between two of our founders, Julian Kusnadi and Chris Lewis, who wondered together, '“now that we have this big chorus, what would happen if we fractured it into smaller pieces?” Or, in perhaps slightly more diplomatic and relevant terms, our chorus is comprised of singers from a litany of different musical backgrounds; we want to be able to afford them the opportunity to showcase their own individual passions in more personal, small ensemble settings.

So, from the Osher Salon at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music we bring you "Passion Projects", the culmination of a six-week sprint in which our singers sorted themselves into parallel, self-directed ensembles that practiced their own repertoire selections during the first half of each weekly Fog City rehearsal. The evening will consist of each breakout group performing and then doing an interactive Q&A about their process. It will be a small, intimate, passion-filled pre-Valentine's Day event featuring everything from Renaissance polyphony to classic barbershop to vocal jazz!

“Colors”

The Fog City Singers—a 40-voice men’s vocal ensemble in San Francisco—present COLORS, our 2019 summer concert, featuring our new women’s ensemble, Harmonia!

Having tackled the theme of "light" this past spring, we're refracting our focus this summer into the prismatic world of "color songs," with each piece relating to the mood or symbolism of at least one color.

The freedom of blue skies, the playfulness of brown and yellow baskets, the passion of the red rose, the complexity of race relations—we'll explore all these and more through a color-focused selection of barbershop, choral, and contemporary a cappella works.

“City Walk: A Concert of Metropolitan Melodies”

Cities are magical places. They attract dreamers and doers, inspire idealists and romantics, and serve as a backdrop to humanity’s undying ambition to build or search for something greater. On the other hand, cities can be unkind, boasting a mechanistic indifference to the toils of the individual as society rushes onward. This concert will feature songs about familiar cities around the world in all their glory, humor, romance, and dismay.

We'll sizzle in the streets of New York, let loose on the steamboats of New Orleans, meander in the moonlight of San Francisco, and bounce between notable burgs of history too.

We'll also debut our two contest pieces that we'll be performing at the 2018 International Barbershop Chorus Contest in Orlando this summer!
